LIPID FORUM OF PAKISTAN
My dear Senior, Junior colleagues, Family physicians, Pharma associates
Ladies and Gentlemen
Asalamualakum.
It is a great honor for me and my entire team to welcome you all on the historic occasion of launching ceremony of “Lipid Forum of Pakistan”, a dream came true.
I have been in the medical field for more than 50 years when I joined medical college in1973, since then listening of Chiknai (Cholesterol) from the mouths of my family members and colleagues alike about its benefit and worst effects.
My all colleagues will agree with me that in almost all conferences in country or abroad lipid are the talk of the meetings, but what I and my dear friends have observed that despite one of the most important causative factors of cardiovascular diseases it has never been given due share of importance as a separate and independent factors.
In other countries lipid societies do exit and they are working tremendously against lipid drawbacks and have developed guidelines while we are lacking even proper lipid forums and guidelines for our local population.
In a landmark initiative to advance cardiovascular health and promote lipid management in Pakistan, the Lipid Forum of Pakistan has been officially established.
The formation of this dedicated forum marks a significant step toward creating a unified platform focused on standardizing lipid management, developing a national lipid registry, and facilitating collaborative research across the country. It also aims to propagate the latest scientific knowledge and international guidelines among healthcare professionals at all levels, ensuring improved patient outcomes through informed clinical practice.
The Lipid Forum of Pakistan will bring together distinguished members of medical community
Dyslipidemia refers to abnormal levels of lipids in the bloodstream of the human beings, poses a significant risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) diseases. Dysregulation in these lipid levels, whether due to genetic predispositions or lifestyle factors, can lead to atherosclerosis and other CV complications and any organ of the body can be affected.
In Pakistan, the prevalence of dyslipidemia, or abnormal blood lipid levels, is very high, with studies reporting a prevalence of 95.2%. This includes conditions like high cholesterol and high triglycerides. Low HDL-C (good cholesterol) was also observed in a significant portion of the population, at 87.4%. Studies also show that the prevalence of dyslipidemia can vary by region.
This is a very alarming situation as a nation we are already heading on top of Diabetic prevalence and other non-communicable diseases are also fast growing like MI, CVA, Renal Failures Peripheral Arterial diseases and many more.
I initially discussed the idea to establish the Lipid forum of Pakistan with my colleagues Prof Feroz Memon and Prof Nawaz Lashari both agreed for my idea and give unconditional support. The Idea of forum was also seconded by Prof Yousuf Kamal, Prof Qaiser Jamal, Prof Abdul Malik, Prof Raj Kumar, Dr Shirjeel Hussain, Dr Zaman Baloch and many others, and gave their unconditional support. I am extremely thankful to all.
